What front band to use rigid or flex band. In the hot rod 727s I have built in the pasted I always put a rigid front band and a 4.2 or 5.0 lever. My friend with a trans shop want me to put 3.8 lever and flex band. I say 4.2 and a rigid band. I don't like the flex bands I have had them brake. he told me that why they broke is that I used a 4.2 or a 5.0 lever and a lot of line pressure could be but I still like a rigid front band and I like that they look like that thay have more suface area . And what lining to use. Thanks ken

I used a flex, stock friction material and a billet 3.8 lever from Dave Goerend plus his valve body. Over 10,000 miles of truck pulling, drag racing and general abuse with no problems yet.
That's how Dave explained it to me, with the kind of line pressure the valve body was setup for there was no reason for a higher ratio lever. However he did warn me it would break the stock 3.8 lever right off.

What else did you change in your trans when you built it? I'm going to building mine this winter & was wondering what upgrades to go with.
Thanks, Jim
I bought from Dave a 3 disc converter and his valve body, along with a billet 3.8 lever, billet strap, and billet anchor. I got rid of the straight cut gears in my overdrive section and put a set of 15* out of a 47RE overdrive that I had lying around. I also put a billet input knowing that I was going to need it. I did replace the overdrive piston retainer, but that was because I started out with a 47RE. I did drill a small hole in the lube passage under the OD piston retainer so the rear sprag clutch can get more oil. The rest of the trans was rebuilt stock, used stock clutch count with OE type clutches from Borg Warner.
