Yeah, if you take a good look at it and compare the size of it and an nv5600, it's no bigger. I wouldn't buy a loose one though, find a big truck junkyard freightliner or kw or whatever straight truck with a 6bt motor and buy the tranny, bell, adapter, starter and flywheel at one time.

yea it wasnt called the sm465 but it was offered in like 83-87 in half tons only.its in my 1985 sales book on the option list for a c10.
That was the GM version of the Chrysler A833. I have two of them here. They were based on the Chrysler 4 speed car transmission and came with a Hurst side mounted shifter. Most had a poor track record behind the 6.2L GM diesel. They had a problem destroying the rear mainshaft bearing. That's how I ended up with two of them. Do a Google on A833.

The A833 was behind most mopar muscle cars wasn't it?

The 833 chryco tranny came in direct high and overdrive high versions, it is not the same as either of the gm trannies , non of these granny gear 4 speed gm trannies or the np435 would be a good candidate for use behind a 6bt in a truck, the rpm drop would kill you when towing. Guys ***** about the rpm drop between 2 of the gears when towing heavy with the getrag or 4500.
Fourth gear is an overdrive. Yes it is a retrofitted variant of the four speed muscle car transmission. If I knew what I know now I might have been able to get more than 50,000 miles between rebuilds. I now think running a 5W-30 synthetic motor oil as gear lube could have given a better life expectancy. The rear mainshaft bearing seemed to fail after prolonged interstate speed driving probably from a lube break down problem. Strangely enough this Chevy version can be adapted to fit behind a Cummins again using 4BT step van parts. I would not recommend it to be used behind a 6BT but I know of one past case where it was installed behind an unmodified 105 HP 4BT.
That is the overdrive version of the A-833. It was mainly used behind Slant 6 & 318 in MOPARS. Some Chevy diesels also used it that i know of. It is a 4 speed with wide ratio first & second, shift linkage altered to put it in direct drive for third & the old third position fitted with OD gears. Usually it is in an aluminum case too.
I've got an A833 in my '78 behind the slant six and it works great for a half-ton truck and it's certainly taken a lot of abuse, but I wouldn't put it behind a Cummins.
The non-OD kind (which is much stronger) did indeed come behind Mopar hemi muscle cars and would do just fine behind a Cummins, I should think, considering how much power those cars made.
