3200 gov spring & natural defueling

In my quest to rebuild my VE pump and eliminate leaks I've explored several avenues (Do-it-yourself, ship off for rebuild, R&R, etc, etc).

When talking to a local shop who will replace all the seals and adjust the fuel plus time it, he recomended not putting in the 3200 governor spring for what I'm using the truck for (driver, pull 5-10,000lb every so often). He said that the pump naturally starts defueling around 2700 anyway and the spring wouldn't do much for me.

He is the local diesel guru and has a pull truck that does real well. What is it about the 3200 spring that everyone raves about? With my current set up I very seldom hit 2500rpms now (I've always been kinda slow) .

If one never uses/needs the 2500-3200 rpm powerband is the spring a waste? Since the sweet spot is 2200/2400 or so, why go higher? Diesel injection is still an advanced placement course for me.

Should I be talked out of the upgrade for my uses or is he steering me down the wrong path?

Sombody straighten me out please?

For the minimal cost of the spring, go ahead and put it in. If you ever "need" it, it's there, and I suspect you will if you're pulling 10k.

He is right that the pump starts to fall off before 3200 RPM with the 3200 RPM spring, but it's not nearly so drastic as he makes it out to be. Most of 'em fuel pretty hard to 3k with the 3200 RPM spring.

Even if it didn't increase your max RPM at all, it would still be worth it for the improved throttle response.

For a working truck the extra RPM is very helpful when pulling grades at highway speed. You can downshift into direct drive when EGT or trans temp starts to climb and still maintain road speed.

It's well worth the $12.

I third the "go for it" if you have made all the changes that are in your sig.
You have enough "experience" to know when to back off ( if needed)
The response at mid throttle is a grab in the trousers... lol... is worth $12.
