alright have to change the shoes any how and thought why not. do i just have to get the shoes or do i have to change the cylinders too. if i do which size should i use.
and can i just say i need the shoes for a 1992 d350 at the auto parts store, any spechic brand to buy, remember im a poor student, that also has to change a fuel pump and fix the Rad ( the guy at the Radator shop by the way said he would love to trade his furd for it, thought its a beast of a truck).

Yes, you can just install the 3" shoes. And yes, for a 1 ton (d/w350). No other parts required. But...you're drums need to be turned/resurfaced all the way to the outer edge. Shouldn't be a problem as long as they're still good. You can use the cylinders you have. But since you're in there, why not upgrade to the 1 ton Chevy units. I have them and like them. They're cheap and easy to change. Part numbers are in the "sticky" section.
If they're adjusted right, it's all good. Large diam. turns into more pushing force...you stop quicker. I didn't notice any difference in pedal travel. It may even be better since the brakes are adjusted correctly now.
You'll have to have the drums turned if you're upgrading to the 3" shoes. They take the full width of the drum surface. The area that the old narrower shoes don't contact will for sure need cleaned up.
