2nd gen steering shaft on 1st gen?

The whole shaft won't work; BUT, about everyone around here that has an older Dodge, gas or diesel, has taken the lower end of the later-model shaft and retrofitted it onto the 1st Gen.
I have not done it myself, but have seen dozens of them.
From what I gather, the U-joint end is almost a direct fit on the steering-gear splines; it requires a little notch being ground, or somesuch.
The outer sleeve of the U-joint end of the shaft is a precise slip-fit over the 1st Gen. shaft.
Once the U-joint end is properly attached to the steering-gear, with the sleeve gloved over the shaft, the outer 2nd Gen. sleeve gets welded to the 1st Gen. solid shaft.
Done properly, cleaned up and painted, it looks like it was meant to be there.
For no more than a Borgeson, or Flaming River, shaft costs, it is more trouble than it is worth to scavenge junk-yards for a good 2nd Gen. shaft to butcher.

There are people on here that have made the 2nd gen shaft fit.
I have one in the garage and the splines do not fit on the gear box, our trucks have a larger diameter shaft with different spline counts, an attempt was made to grind it out to fit, but it still was not going on correctly.
The column shaft is completely different with a weird square looking hole rather than a splined one, but the slip joint seems to be large enough to slide the original upper portion in and welded.
