1st time pulling

what are your thoughts on pulling a 8.5K sled on a nearly stock 5-speed?

4Low 2nd gear give it a little fuel and come off the clutch and when you start moving good put it on the floor. Most of the sleds are closer to 25-30K, my truck is 7.6K. If it starts bouncing push in the clutch or you WILL brake something. No offense but you dont make enough power to need a DD A good South Bend is more than enough even with a lot of mods. Some bars like these will also help keep it from jumping. Also if there are few or no ruels you want to get your hitch as tall as you can it will pick up on the front of the sled and help carry it down the track and give you more traction.

If you are tired of your truck and can afford another, then sled-pull to a fare-the-well.

Otherwise, it shows a lot more good sense to enjoy the pulls from the bleachers, and keep your truck intact and your dollars in your shirt pocket.

One slight mis-step, in a hard pull, will show itself in weakened/broken pieces, even years down the road.

As far as drivetrain mods go, if you want to do well, U need a locker in both front and rear axles. Full lockers not just clutch lockers. Some organizations require driveshaft hoops to keep it from hurting/destroying anything if/when a u-joint goes pop. Traction bars.
Depending on how serious u want to get a duel disk is a good idea, however if its only a couple times a year (like local fairs) just find a real beefy single. Call south bend n discuss options with them.
