1st gen with utility bed

Just sold my '99 and I'm looking to get back into a 1st gen I found one I like but it has a utility box on it. It'll probably be useful but I know that I'm not gonna like the looks of it so here's my question: anybody have any experience with taking these off of an old truck and replacing it with a regular pickup bed? How are they mounted generally? How much work is involved in the replacement? I'm sure that I'll come out ahead money-wise since the utility bed I beleive is worth about $1500.

A lot depends on if the utility bed was bolted or welded, I have seen both, many times on the same truck. I see your in CO, I found a nice dually bed from a 93 at a junk yard in Denver and they wanted a $1000 for it.

I saw a pretty ugly utility box on ebay with a buy it now price of $1250 and made the assumption (something I'm good at) that this one would be worth more, guess not. I'm having second thoughts about getting this truck now. It sure is hard to find a decent 1st gen these days.

If the truck was originally a cab & chassis the wheelbase will be wrong and there will be a gap between the cab and the bed. Measure the wheelbase to be sure. Pickups were 131 and 149 inches, C&C models were 135 and 159 inches.

That's good info, didn't know that. I'll have the dealer measure it for since it's out of state.
