1993 Diesel 3/4 Ton 4x4 Getrag Transmission
Hello Group - Just became a new member. I would like some feed back on the following: My pickup currently has 108,399 miles on it. I just lost my second transmission. The dealership put a reman. in back in '99 when it had 77,000 miles on it. Figuring the match out, how long should one of these GETRAG - 5-sp. transmissions last ? The input shaft, bearing, housing, gear, are SMOKED ! YES, the transmission was still full of oil. This truck is not abused. I would like to know how or if it's possible now to get any kind of help from Dodge/Chrysler Motors on this. I guess how many of you have had this problem and what was your experience - solution .
Thank you
Mark

Welcome to the board. I do not own a 5-spd but have read many times that you should overfill the tranny with fluid. The bearings do not get enough fluid to keep them lubed enough, I guess. After filling the normal way (drain hole), I think they just unbolt a bolt higher up and fill in another quart or so.
Hope this helps and I am sure someone will chime in.

Thanks Scott, I'll keep that in mind when I rebuild or replace this one. I've been reading through some of the past threads, and how they fill from the top before sticking the shifter in. Trying to figure out all the different weight ratings of oils they are using.

I fill mine though the top bolt hole for the PTO block-off plate. I just got the truck and some slimy black goo came out when I changed it. Put in Mobil1 5w30 synthetic, 5 quarts instead of the 4 it holds up to the fill plug. Shifts much nicer on these cool mornings now than it did before.
You might want to look into an N4500 conversion instead?

I just had a bering and seal kit plus new input shaft installed in mine. The shaft was about 160 and the bering/seal kit about 150.00 plus labor of 250.00. Works really nice again. I used 5-30 Mobil 1 and added about a extra 1/2 quart.
I also have a aux tranny cooler on mine so the fluid stays cool when pulling even in high gear. Thats has really extended the life of my trannys and the truck has 1,180,000 miles, so Ive had some time to experiment.

I lived in Salina for 4 years. Just a couple hours down the road from here.
Sorry for getting OT.
Now...... what type of Aux cooler? One of those that bolts to the PTO cover?
I hauled commercially from 93 to the end of 2000, I pulled a 53 ft trailer delivering boats, and coast to coast was my thing.
I drilled the PTO and mounted a fitting low and high as well as a thermal switch and temp sending unit. Then mounted a tranny cooler and fan with a 12v pump under the cab. I am switching the cooler to a larger unit(A/C condenser from minivan), so I can eliminate the fan and reduce the current draw. It works absolutely awesome.
