What happens is Tom Dick and Jill use chisels and what-not to loosen/tighten the nuts until they get all buggered-up.

If you can't coax it off with the socket, then carefully walk it off with a DULL cold-chisel; use a sharp one and it will dig in deeply, making a bigger mess than you already have.
The bigger the grooves are from your chisel, the easier it is to use the chisel the next time!

That is true, but we are adjusting bearings, not tightening the flange on a hydrant; there is no way to judge proper pre-load when whacking on a chisel with a hammer.


Harbor Freight sells a double-ended spanner that works for less than seven-bucks.
