I had the opportunity to pick up an '82 W350 for parts. It wasn't a long trip, but it went smoothly and the Road Tractor handled it well. The trip was mostly a flat haul except for a 10% grade for 2 miles.

Oh man, that looks like a cool old truck that did some work in it's time. Most ton dumps were used pretty hard.
Glad the trip went well.

Unfortunately it spent too many hard winters in Pennsyltucky salt. The frame is rotten on both sides. What you can't see are the ratchet straps holding the back end to the front end.

Yesterday was the first tractor pull of the season, so I loaded this ride with about 13000 lbs of trailer, tractor, and suitcase weights. It ran the same grade as my '90 W250 at 30mph vs 15mph. And the limiting factor was EGTs, so overall I am extremely pleased with the truck to this point in the build.

In the future I may swap out the S300 in favor of a twin turbo set up. For now I'm going to mess with the aneroid and maybe throw in a 5 x 0.012 or 6 x 0.011 injectors to have more usable trottle.

Stay tuned, this build is far from completed

100% faster up the hill loaded is a pretty solid improvement!

What size injectors are in there now? I put some 5x12s in my P-pumped 12V I put in my Poptop RC….which still needs plenty of test and tune time.

Gavin Huke did a pretty interesting HX35 comparison with a bunch of turbos last year. IIRC had some out performing the S300. Different compressor wheel designs, hot side options too. Lots of dyno info. It may or may not be relevant to your rig,

He was running 5x16's

I'm running 5 x 0.016s. I still have a lot of test and tune to do as well!

Thanks man! I'll definitely check that out. The S300 I'm running was recommended by the pump shop. I'm not dead set on it, but I spent the money and kind of would like to make it usable.

Some turbos are too big for around town stuff. They shine at 2000rpm+. If you are down low they can be pigs. Sort of like gas motors and cams. Nothing down low with some. I don't know if you have a P pump. They can make more power with smaller injectors than VE trucks. An eye opener was comparing DDP injectors between the VE HP ratings VS the possibly exact same sizes for the P pumps. For that matter in any brand of injectors.

Everything is a compromise. I hope to get mine right, or good enough. Good enough to eventually pull a decent sized camper. My truck did that commercially off the showroom floor delivering new RV's.

There is nothing about this unit that is like a poorly matched gasser cam and carb and rear end. I have smooth power from idle to 4000 rpms. I think the issue is the single turbo can't keep up with the amount of fuel the P7100 is making. On the rack at the injection shop it's max is close to 375cc's of fuel and it's currently set to deliver close to half of that.

I am going to change the aneroid spring out for one that is less aggressive. That decision is based off of hauling a 5500 lb payload on my trailer today, which puts me about 18k gross, and I noticed that if I shift like I'm driving a big cam 400 the EGTs hit the peg real fast. If I drive like there is an egg under the throttle pedal (ie hang out longer in each gear), EGTs are manageable and top speed is attained but not as quickly.

I have less than 1000 miles on this unit, so it's still in the test and tune stages. This also my first time messing around with a P7100 so my learning curve is steep. That being said, I might change out the S300/HE351 hybrid for a HX35 14cm to see if there is a difference and I might swap out the injectors for a less aggressive set. It will take some trial and error, but I'll take the time to get this right, because good enough never is.

I am going to dive into "drive pressure" to see what and how to track that. My 3 piece manifold has a place for the pyro. I guess it needs a spot for a drive pressure gauge(?)

Just curious what BAR rating are your injectors supposed to pop at?

I have one of those extra ports on the exhaust manifold too. I think drive pressure vs boost should be 1:1.

I have no idea what these injectors pop at. They were new from DAP, and the pop pressure was not listed in the specs. I would assume somewhere close but a little above stock?. The pump shop recommended 5x15s to match the output of the P7100, so that is why I chose those sticks.

What’s the Cummins number on that, or did you get aftermarket?
