16cm Swap???

Hey guys ive been seriously thinking about swapping to a 16cm housing but i didnt know how it would effect my egt's towing. Ocassionaly i tow well over 10k and didnt know if it would get hot. As of right now i hit about 1200 pre turbo without really backing off and 27psi on a good day.

I think the 16cm will spool a little faster then the factory 18cm but it will also run hotter. Your temps seem ok to me but you might also want to check out the sticky and install a valet switch they are great for keeping your temps in check. The other thing they are good for is the ol' power on demand.

I don't have personal experience with anything like that, but from what I've heard, if you gasket match the 16cm housing to the exhaust manifold, it will flow as well as the 18cm and build more boost and it'll do it quicker.

That is exactly what I'm planning on doing, when I get some time. I already have the housing and spent about an hour or so with a die grinder and a couple burrs porting it.

If you find a 16cm cheap go ahead and swap.

If you have to buy a new one use the money for something else. It isn't worth the effort from a performance stand point.

Going from a 18.5 to a 16 housing I saw EGT's go up 50 degrees at WOT.

You'd love an hx35/12wg. They are very easy to find for cheap. Like the same price as a 16cm housing new.

I got my w/g 12cm housing for $70 and its been money well spent. The spool for around town and normal unloaded driving is 100x better. For your EGT's while towing you can adjust your boost to what you want and bleed off the extra pressure so the temps stay cool.

It was fairly easy to get mine to mate up, but I still have my stock downpipe. You will need to have the correct style flange to make it work. I'm not sure what options you have for finding a 4" flange that will bolt the the 12cm housing of the HX35. I don't even know if that option exists. I'm assuming you have the whole 4" Stans exhaust and their 4" downpipe.

With the downpipe, if you are running it on your H1C then it will bolt up to the HX35. I have that on my truck. You don't use the second gen elbow that may come with the HX35. The outputs are the same. Where the difference is if it is waste gated, then the pipe has to move back an inch.

You don't have to cut it up if you don't want to. You can order the 4" down pipe for the 2nd gen. 94-97/98 and it should just bolt up. Ebay is a good place to find them (hx35), but even better is in the classifieds here at DTR. I trust the folks here a lot more than an ebay seller. But I do use ebay also. Just keep an eye out and a good deal will pop up.
