140 mph!?

there are a couple of 91 non intercooled trucks with 3:55 gears running around here that claim to run 140 mph, only with pump turned all the way up, do yall think that could be possible?

I think that thay would have to have the 3200 gov spring allso but ..........that seams like a lot of air to be pushing with are brick wall truck,,,at least at that speed!!!!!

No. My truck will peg the speedo (100mph) easily with my mods, but I dont think there is any way it would run 140. I cant even imagine a 1st gen running 140mph...talk about a flying brick!

It would take about 1,000 horsepower to get 6200 lbs through the quarter mile at 140mph/13sec ET. Not sure where the drag coefficient would come into play in an unlimited salt flats-type run. I'm sure the numbers would still have to be way up there for a very non-aerodynamic truck.

Well, in theory 3500 RPM times 33 inch tires times a 3.07 rear end times .70 overdrive equals 160 miles per hour...

What's the overdrive ratio available?

And more important, what's the drag ratio of a first gen Dodge? Equivalent of a parachute through a tank of wet dirt?

is a link to calculations regarding overcoming air friction (drag) and horsepower.

Unfortunately, they use a Corvette as their example. Still, you can look at the example and do some rough extrapolations. If you have the co-efficient of drag for our bricks and the frontal area in square feet, you can plug them in and come real close.

Then you have to guess at rolling resistance and drive-train resistance.

I don't think you can stuff enough horses under the hood to push the brick that fast. I don't even want to be around (maybe in a helicopter) when it's tried.

Regards, DBF

Maybe they are reading the metric side of the speedometer? If not, I gotta lawn mower that breaks the sound barrier.

Oh heck, I'd be confident taking the truck to 140 on a salt flat or dry lake bed, provided I had the power. That really isn't fast on a dry lake bed.

I think that 1000 HP for the quarter is a bit over-estimating. Isn't Stomp or one of the modified-pump guys in the mid 13's with 600 HP? 1000 HP seems like it'd be high 11's, 12's at least... (Of course, his escape speeds aren't anywhere near 140...)

I think that you could coax 140 out of a 600 HP truck. So who with a 600 HP truck wants to come down to El Mirage one weekend?

I've got 3.07s & 33" (maybe a bit smaller, not sure what 265/75 is) tires and a getrag OD AND a gsk 3200 spring with missing high idle screw getting full travel of throttle
I find that it is easy to get to about 90 in 4th... then bark the turbo, shift to 5th and I have no idea how fast it will run. Fully tweeked pump I'm sure I don't put more than 225 down to the ground with my mods. I dyno'd in at 215 with 3" tailpipe and stock intake and mushy stock tc with the 727 auto last fall.

My 1st gen has ran 13.34 @ 99.5mph, and thats with only 310hp at the rear wheels. Oh ya, 3 speed auto too. I think that with 600hp, 140mph would be cake.

The original question was not about the 1/4 mile, it was just can they do 140.
It is about basic math. just do the math and see if it can be done mathamaticly, then its up to the HP wether they can pull it off.
My truck has 3.73 and 215-85-16 tires and it will hit about 110.
Im guessing with 3.54 and 33" tires it would be close mathimaticly.
Now its up to HP and wether they have the guts, or stupidity to try it

I think it's probably possible. It's not very sensible to do so though if a deer/cow/old lady steps out in front of you you'll be flipping it end-over-end.

I did 140 on my Kawasaki once but I was young and foolish.
