10W40 For Getrag

Hey guys, thoughts on using AMSOIL 10W40 in a Getrag?

Thanks.

Don't do it, IMO. The Getrag g360 uses an oil fling type of oil dispersal and requires 30 weight. There have been some that have put 90 wt and burned out the bearings. The best thing is to add an extra quart for better cooling. I run straight 30 Mobil one and I live in a pretty hot place. I also have 3 extra quarts in it because of cooling fins that bolt to the PTO ports...Mark

I was thinking about throwing on a couple Fast Coolers to add a couple quarts, would you use 5W30 or 10W30, not sure if AMSOIL has straight 30?

I think that the multi vis is ok and now that I think about it, I probably put in multi vis also, the ole' brain isn't as sharp as it used to be [duhhh] I also don't think that synthetic oil is necessary and a straight 30 wt dino oil is ok too ...Mark

I've been running 5w50 synthetic for last 5 years. No issues.

That may not be such a good idea at 45 degrees...Mark

I run Mobil 1, 5W-30 in my Getrags and have for years.

Why? I figured it would offer the protection/cushioning of a thicker oil most of the time, without getting too thick in the winter (the 5W part). So far so good.

I could be wrong, but I believe the issue is that the thicker oil is not "flung" up to the front main bearing correctly or in the correct amount and the bearing eventually fails. Does it get hot, like 100 plus F. where you live? I am not an expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. I did have a getrag grenade on me on my way to Mexico and what I do know about it is from that time, what time is it again? [duhhh]...Mark

I'd say this 5W50 synth pours very much the same (if not thinner) than dino 10W30 at ambient temps. I overfill too. My Getrags are a long ways from factory bearing tolerances... I figured I'd give the stuff a shot, and its been good to me.

Climate here ranges from about -5°C to low 30's... dunno what that is in F.

86 F.. Like I said you may have a problem at 47 C. Which is nearly 117 F.. Our record in Phoenix is 122 F. or 50 C and we have tied that a couple of times, I think....Mark

I am in Northern Alberta, can get as low as -40C and up to low 30's as well, although I do lost of traveling and could end up somewhere with high temps (down south). I was looking at AMSOIL full synthetic 10W40, 10W30 or 5W30. The Getrag is stock as far as I know but I will be adding 2 fast coolers. I normally do minimal towing but am looking at hauling a trailer with a car on it across Canada next month. Just looking for the best overall protection.

Doing some reading the "Synchromax and Synchromesh" products seem to be really good, do you guys have experience with this stuff?
