10" sub in big box = great sound!!!

Well as you all know, these old trucks don't have the best audio. Well i got a sony stereo/cd player with an aux plug in for my ipod a while ago and just the stereo helped the sound a lot! it sounded a lot better in crisper, even with the stock speakers still in. Then i got some sony xplod 6x9s and put them in the door and wow they sound awesome! my speakers in my door were pretty shot so the new quality 6x9s helped a lot! and then a little while ago, my friend gave me his TIS 10" sub and 750w amp for free cuz he was gettin a new system so i was happy as can be. The 10" sub in the little box sounded pretty good behind the seat, with the 750 watt amp under the seat but it wasn't the best i've heard and it only rumbled the seat a little bit in the middle. Well my friend(the same one that gave me the sub and amp) built a big sub box in his wood class at school and he was gonna put it in his '80 chev. He said there was an equation to get the best sound out of a sub box for the best sound development so he figured it out and built the box for a 10" sub. Well he got it all done and he went to put it behind his seat of his old chevy and it didn't fit so it just sat in his shop. Later on he asked me if i wanted to try out the sub box in my truck. So we put in my truck and put my 10" sub in it and wow! I loved it! I couldn't believe how much the huge box helped. It really did help with sound development and it sounds awesome! it'll rumble the whole seat now, with just one 10" sub! I was really surprised, it sounds 10 times better in the big huge box than it did in the little box. He sold me the big sub box for $15. It fits just right behind the seat, but there isn't really any room back there anymore to put anything, good thing i have a toolbox to put all my crap in! I just thought I'd post this for the guys that want better audio in there old trucks. I will try and get some measurements of the sub box if anyone wants to build one.
here is a pic of the old little box i had the sub in:

and here is the good sounding, big box:

here is my stereo and the diamond plate mounting plate i made:

92smoking blacky I just took 2 12'' sub outta my 92 and installed 1 12''. It sounded awesome but it's crisper with just the 1 12'' now. Well I didn't do it a friend of mine has a stereo shop did it, I don't know much about it other than off/on and loud/louder lol. I have a 2500 watt pushing the sub and 2 750 watts pushing the rest. All the speakers have been replaced so yea it's plenty good. Nothing like a big ole jukebox in the truck. I like it when somebody pulls up next to ya thumpin and you crank up a lil ZZ Top to wake them up.

The big box probably does help, BUT, what is important is sizing the box properly for the speaker, too big or too small will affect performance greatly. The manufacturers do spec box size in cubic feet.

I only have a single 10 running off of 200W RMS in my truck, but, it is more than plenty for the truck.

I know very little about the way they work but the 2-12'' I had would vibrate the glass to the point it would look wavy. I couldn't hang with it but about 1/2 up then I had to bale. Tater93 your truck is fantastic.

yeah i was thinkin about buyin another 10" sub and cuttin another hole in the box and puttin it in, cuz i know where to get another 10" sub like the one i have now for cheap. But my buddy was sayin that it would sound better with just the one, mainly because the box was built for just that one. It sounds really good though, I am very happy with it. The seat does lay on the box when you put it back so it rumbles the seat very good because it is barely touching the seat. It fits just right though. I will try and get the dimensions tomorrow.

awsome 92smokin! theres still room for 2 more 10's haha! but then you'd have to design the box different. i bet it sounds clean! i like how thin that box is too! its not a big perfectly shaped akward box that takes up space!

I just put a pair of 12s behind my seat in a full width box. I used stuffing in the box to make it seem like its bigger. It still doesnt hit super low, but its way better than no stuffing. I can put the seat all the way back and there is about 1" clearance for the subs to throw.

Tater93 you have a really nice truck

I've got 1 10" behind my center console. The console flips up to hide it when I'm parked. Also have room on each side for a toolbox. Rest of the system is alpine type r components front and back power by 100x4rms and the sub is powered by 400x1rms.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The quality of the sound definetly depends on building the enclosure correctly to the proper air space specs, and making sure you have no air leaks is very important also. If I turn the subs up more than half way everything in the mirrors is distorted to a total blur. I guess its a little overkill for a guy who listens to stuff like Waylon and Haggard and Hank Jr. Oh well!

Tater93 you listen to the good music. The good ole country stuff needs alot of base to make it sound like your in a honky tonk bar. Yea your truck is sweet and shows your pride in your ride.
