Xfer case shift lever question

Xfer case shift lever question
I have a queston on the later model shift levers for the transfer case.
I am going to put a 2000 model cab on my 95. After reading about the problems doing an auto to 5spd swap using a newer trans. I need/want to use a newer style floor mount xfer shifter.
I am wonderng if I can use one from a 1/2 ton truck.
Are they the same as for the 3/4 and ton trucks? Or do I have to find one from a diesel?
Also how are they attached to the xfer case as far as shifting mechanism?
Cable or rod?
