Would a TPS or a fuel sending unit from a gasser work on my ctd?

I'm suspecting that both the TPS and Fuel sending unit are bad in my 1997 CTD and i'm heading out to a Pick N Pull yard with a buddy this weekend. In past trips, theyve had plenty of 1500's and a few 2500 gassers with lots of good parts. Never seen a CTD there tho. If I were to pull the fuel unit or the TPS out of one of these gassers, would they work in my CTD?

TPS is unique to a CTD.
Gasser fuel tank modules have the lift pump inside, sort of doubt the sender is the same.

The problem older sending units have is the circuit board isn't resistant to diesel. Probably because it was designed for gas.
The new improved senders are resistant to diesel, cost about $50 from the dealer.

Son of a......I figured that was the case, but was hoping i'd somehow get lucky. $50 isnt bad, but I'm struggling hard with money as it is so the $170 TPS is gonna have to wait again...Thanks for your always helpful input man

oh yeah, I've read that rigging up an in-cab potentiometer in place of the tps would be a good alternative. Do you know if there's a write up on it anywhere? Ive tried searching for about an hour with no luck....

yeah I cleaned mine twice with no results at all. After closely inspecting the wires and harnesses that connect to the tps, I found that a power steering overflow resulted in wet wires, I pulled the harness from the tps and it was dry but there is an almost idential plug underneath and behind the tps that plugs into the engine somewhere- that's soaked with ps fluid still. Anyone think that may be an issue? I can't seem to dry it out either :-/

I spent a total of under 7 dollars on it over the weekend, 2.99 for the pot and 3.75 for the wire...about 10 minutes hooking it up carefully, but temporary style...just hanging in the cab to test if it worked. Took it for a drive and BAM, all is well. It only locks up the TC in one spot tho, about 3 quarters turned it locks up at about 50mph. Other than that I get no lock-up. No big deal tho, im going to wire up a lock-up switch tonight, hopefully.

Thanks for the help, links, info, advice and input everyone. i'm extremely pleased with the outcome, especially knowing that I spent 6 dollars and some change, instead of 170 for a new TPS.

You should have some adjustment with lockup. I can change mine around some. You have to do it in VERY small adjustments and you can usually fine tune it to where you like it. Glad you got it working though! I felt the same way when i did mine. I was afraid my transmission was dying the way it was acting, but i decided to stop by radio shack and get a POT to see how it did. Its perfect now.

I noticed that they had pots that were 10 turn and different other kinds. Would any of these make the adjustment easier?

but yeah, im loving life in the ctd now...i've been driving the wife's honda since i started having these issues.

As long as it is a 5k ohm Linear POT, then you should have some adjustment. Im not sure if other POT's will work or not, but the 5k OHM linear pot is the one i used and with a little adjustment i can change my shift to overdrive, and lockup speed quite a bit. I would figure yours would be the same?
