1995Ram

1995 Ram diesel automatic. I started the truck this morning and it stalled. Found it wouldn't idle at its normal 750 rpm, but I could keep it running if I kept enough throttle in it so RPM's wouldn't drop below 500. Ran okay on freeway just needed to keep the rpm's up at stoplights etc. Made it to work. Turned off the key ( all electrical turned off) but the truck kept running with the key out of the ignition. Let off on the throttle to kill it. Duplicated this 4 times!
Anyone have an idea where to start?

yup I was going to type fuel shutoff solenoid best price genosgarage.com $110 and get it overnighted for another $35> I just ordered some parts from them yesterday at 5pm EST and they came this morning before 10am and was $200 cheaper than dealer even with extra cost of overnight shipping. The shutoff solenoid itself rarely fails and is by far the most needlessly replaced item on a 12 valve.
When they fail they usually look obviously burnt up on the outside.
Most times you just have to remove the solenoid and clean the innards. Replace the rubber boot if missing or torn.
Other problem can be a sticking shutdown relay on the firewall.

Thank-you for your replies. I removed the solenoid and found the rubber boot was all that was keeping the shaft of the solenoid connected to the joint (snap ring and beveled lip worn worn away). Couldn't repair so bought replacement from Larry B's. Replaced and it run's like a top. This replacement also corrected the following issue I'd been having for the last two years.

Intermittent or no Turbo. I dove the truck for about two years without the turbo providing any boost. Took it to AIG Diesel in Portland Oregon for diagnose and repair but all they did was their recommended fuel system flush ($300) they said to change the injectors ($). I didn't agree with that so just continued driving it the way it was. I suspect the gap caused by the wore out solenoid shaft wasn't allowing the fuel valve to open fully.

Glad you fixed it! My linkage rod (from crossover linkage to back of IP) was out of adjustment on my 3500 (prev.owner must've been jacking with it.) Truck had no power at all; it would struggle to carry itself 60mph with the pedal on the floor. Jeremy over at Disturbed Diesel Performance fixed it in like 10 minutes.. It was like driving a completely different truck, now that I have throttle and BOOST.

Besides being installed the boot is all that keeps it together, totally normal.
