Why no KDP recall?
Why no KDP recall?
My 97 hasn't had the KDP fixed yet and I was just wondering why there was never a recall to fix the problem when it was so obviously a Cummins mistake. Anyone know? Also, was wondering if most Cummins or Dodge shops have the jig or do they do it the harder way?
Re:Why no KDP recall?
1. Since it was not a "safety" item a recall was not mandated by the feds.
2. Since there were not actually that many out of the thousands of engines made and the cost was considerable they did not recall them - no such thing as keeping the customer happy when it is expensive.

I've never heard of a shop using the jig. Always the hard expensive way.

It is easy enough to do yourself. If you need a jig, e-maill Harold Bowers at rvhvnfn@juno.com for a jig, wrench to remove fan nut, and complete & easy instructions or pm me for his phone #.

Stan
Re:Why no KDP recall?
Rumor I heard is that neither Dodge nor Cummins acknowledges a flaw in the design. If you take it back to a Dodge dealer, they won't either tab or jig your KDP. They'll just push it back into place (assuming it hasn't already fallen out altogether.) This really won't fix your problem.
Your best bet is to tab it yourself. I hear the jig is easy, but I was looking at how difficult a tab would be and found it to be quite straightforward. The hardest part would be fabbing a tab for yourself. If you find that to be too much, I know Piers sells them for a minor fee on his site. You can get the link to it by clicking on links up on the DTR banner. There might be a couple of other folks around this site that have a couple of extra washers fabbed for you. Hope this helps.

By the way...Where are you located? There's a good chance there's another DTR guy around you with a 12V who might be able to help.
Re:Why no KDP recall?
I e-mailed Cummins awhile ago and they know of the flaw but I don't know that all of the Cummins shops know or know much about it. But like Whiff said I think they will just push the pin back in if it is sticking out. I tab mine. Or you can use the jig. Either works great. good luck -Anthony
