white smoke and shaking after cold night starts

after a cold night...i start the truck it smokes white out the stacks and the truck shakes for about 5-10 sec and then smoothens out...after that everything is fine and there's no more smoke...it doesnt smoke otherwise...i dont get high rpm misses or smoke....

the lines are all good...truck has no leaks...fuel filter is a month old

the only thing left thats never been done in 2 years since i got the truck is the overflow valve and timing....would those be the main things? it should be an just a worn out overflow valve shoudlnt it?

A little white smoke is normal in cold weather. Cold combustion will cause both smoke and rough running till all the cylinders kick in. As long as it goes away in a short amount of time. One thing that can make it worse is retarded timing. It gets a little better with timing increase.

yeah i figured that...i always thought that high rpm misses is "timing" and low rpm misses is the overflow valve....that was always my general thinking...but i guess getting both adjusted wouldnt hurt...i'll get the overflow valve for 30$ from marty precision injection diesel i think it is...i'll find it

Sounds exactly like both my trucks and all my tractors when it's cold and I don't preheat. It's just the nature of a cold diesel engine.

I have the wastegate hose disconnected and plugged on my truck. I can now get up to 28 or 29 PSI at higher RPM with the 3K GSK. With the wastegate connected I could only get 18 PSI. I have read here that the turbo is OK up to about 35 PSI - if you can get there (need more fuel).

One thing to check about the white smoke issue is that BOTH preheater grids come on before you start it. If a relay goes bad, you'll only get half the heat into the engine and you will get those symptoms.

Regarding the wastegate, instead of disabling the actuator completely, you can adjust the rod, and set it to any max. pressure you want.

A popular way to is to plug the hose with a spent .22 shell

To disable the wastegate all you need to do is disconnect the line from the turbo. You only need to plug it to prevent a pressure/vacuum leak. I disconnected it on the top of the motor near the intake manifold - rubber vacuum line. I just found a bolt that fit inside the line, stuck it in and put a hose clamp on it to make sure it doesn't come out.
