I actually did a search for "whining noise", and someone mentioned that some exhaust set-ups make this noise.
I just bought this truck, and it has a custom exhaust...but I'm pretty certain this isnt the problem.
It seems to be coming from around the fan clutch, or maybe a pulley.

It is not a high pitched whine, but kinda like a bearing or bushing that is on it's way out...and it is actually pretty loud. If standing outside of the truck, it almost completely drowns out the diesel sounds of the engine.

The noise follows rpm's.

My first thought was the fan clutch...or maybe the tensioner pulley that is below the alternator...or something like that.

Is there something on these trucks that has been known to fail and do this?

i would pull off the serp belt, and start spinning pullys by hand. i bet u will feel 1 that isnt right.

 

AC compressors and alternators are famous for that

 

yep the AC compressor likes to fail....also the lil boots coming off the front cooler grid like to get kinks or holes

 

Could be the bearing on the idler pulley. Mine was doing that and i just pulled the whole thing off, removed the pulley and repacked the bearing. No more noise since.

From what I understand, other than a slipping belt , the tensioner is usually the cause of said noise. A/C compressor and alternator would be second on my list of things to check. The a/c compressor can be bypassed with a shorter belt if $ does not permit fixing it now.

 

Well, one more thing to check is the water pump. These pumps are prone to failed bearings that let the impeller rub against the block.

 

What Came of this problem?

I have a whine I am diagnosing...Mine follows RPM, almost certainly front of the engine...Difference is it comes after driving a while.

Not just hot engine but say after been running an hour. I am hoping its the idler or tension pulley b/c thats probably the cheapest to fix. The noise is certainly external to the engine in that its in the accessory drive. My plan is drive it till its making the noise...pull off the idler pulley replace it and restart it...if its fixed done. IF not the idler pulley part also replaces the pulley only on the tensioner as well and then I'll place the new on it.

So I have a plan...I just did this search to see if there are more obvious things that whine as such that I may have overlooked!

steering pump ? steering pumps have been whining since the beginning of time

 

Possibly, if your speaking of a bearing or something in the PS pump. It is lower on my suspision list just b/c it sounds more from the passenger side...BUT the beauty of the PS pump, just remove the belt...if its still there it must be a gear driven Accessory such as the PS pump. We ahve all heard PS pumps whine when the pumps goes out but it isn't that sort of whine in this case...maybe the original poster's whine...but not mine.

 

If you take the cap off the pump...and it is the cause... You WILL hear it
