I need a 2wd nv4500 for my '98 12v. I have a core but don't particularly want to give it up. Is there some place that sells transmissions outright for a decent price? Used instead of rebuilt is fine, I just can't seem to find such a place, and there was nothing in the classifieds last time I checked.

You can also try ebay, there was a couple on there yesterday.

 

I got one on craigslist.org, but I think that was a very rare occurance, and it would not have shown up with "nv4500" search... more like "dodge 5 speed"

I really lucked out- got for one from a V10 with less than 100k, and worn 3rd gear synchros... (other than that, the trans is in great shape)

I also did a quick search on www.car-part.com, but it only turned up 1 page (in the whole USA), and low price of $950... some mention core charges, so do not... you may try other junkyard search sites...
