When changing oil , do you........?
Do you fill the new filter with oil before installing it ?

I do this on my turbo--ed tractors , but never have heard of anyone worrying about it with automotive type engines .
Re:When changing oil , do you........?
I always do. Since the filter is easy to put on when full. I always fill it first. Also, to me anyway, it only makes since. Why starve the motor for oil that first few seconds while the filter fills.

My 2 cents.

Merry Xmas!!
Re:When changing oil , do you........?
Always pre-lube the filter. The turbo bearing feeds off the filter mount - so you will starve that bearing until oil pressure comes up, which can lead to premature turbo failure.
Bob

Re:When changing oil , do you........?
I admit I never pre fill the filter...never did on big rigs either...but I dont race the motor when I start the engine after I service it...I get oil pressure right away...and my oil samples show no history of wear...I do pre fill my fuel filter but I have a pump setup that pumps out fuel thru a filter I never put unfiltered fuel into the fuel filter
The only time Ive ever prefilled an oil filter is on a new or rebuilt motor
Re:When changing oil , do you........?
Pre-lubing the filter is of questionable value, there is no proof of turbo starvation as there is no more oil there than at cold start on the turbo shaft. The guage is usually the last thing to get oil pressure and the bottom end will starve first where all the compression impacts are on the bearings. Personal preferance based on ease.PK

I also prefill mine. Has anyone used an additive in the oil? like slick 50 etc. I have seen one at a local shop. And wondered if maybe I should add it in. This says help prevent dry starts.
inquiring minds. ;D

Re:When changing oil , do you........?
Use a good quality oil whether it be dino or synthetic and skip the additives. Use that money on fuel treatment or something worth while. Use good quality filters too.
The advertisements for some of that stuff would have you believe you don't need oil at all. Saw one where they drained the oil out of a Viper and ran it around the track and ran a Geo all around town with no oil in the crank case. If that is so, why would you waste money on oil. Give me a break.
Re:When changing oil , do you........?
I often wondered if it really makes a bit of difference. When you drain the oil, the oil in the filter is pulled down, vacuum perhaps, does it pull down the level in the filter from shutdown? I never pulled the filter before draining the oil to see. The pick-up tube must be lower than the filter so I would guess it does. Anybody pull the filter before draining the oil? if so how much oil is in the filter?

Michael
