What's wrong with my dipstick?

I know, funny title, I guess they make medication for that!

Seriously, just did a transmission filter and fluid change, and I noticed as I check the dipstick, one side shows the fluid level right where it should be, top of the hash marks. But if you turn the dipstick to the side with no hash marks on it, it is dry!

Just a small amount of fluid near the edges of the dipstick, but I'm not kidding, the back side of the flat steel is dry. So, my question is, is this really an accurate level of do I need to keep adding fluid till both side of the dipstick are "wet" with fluid. I know weird question, but I can repeat this over and over.

I just wonder if there is some type of "wiper" in the tube, or it is getting wiped clean from the side of the steel tube? I dunno, got me stumped. KD

some times if the fluid isnt completly full it will do that. one of the things that i have always dont is take 3-5 readings on the stick. make sure your truck is leval and the trany is worm. im taking it you just pulled the pan? if you pulled the TC than thats gona add like 5 more quarts.

I pulled the pan, relaced filter, then disconnected a line up at the cooler, pumped out old (2 quarts at a time), shut it off, add 2 quarts, pump out 2 quartss, ad 2 quarts, etc, till all the dark fluid was out. In other words, pumped out all the old and added new, a little at a time, till I got clean fresh fluid.

Then went over to the dipstick for final top off. I must have pumped out more than I added. Still messing with the dipstick level, and I am at 20 quarts so far! Still getting the one side shows full and the other side dry.

I will keep adding, just wanted to double check. Did not want to over fill. Thanks, KD
