If the tranny temp stays low and egts are low, is there any harm in pulling a load in od? Just a 8' camper and 17' boat.

I pulled a 16 foot tandem axle trailer with four four wheelers and a dirt bike up and down the mountains through WV and Pa with no problems with my 95. When it came up against a hill and the rpms dropped enough, it would kick down out of overdrive and go on. Never had a problem.

I pull a trailer 60% of the time....and always in OD...unless the engine is in a lug....or tranny temp gets high....I use a OD lockup switch at times if my tranny starts to hunt (in and out of OD lockup)....normaly my tranny temp pulling is 150-170*

I was told by a trans expert that towing in OD is OK as long the RPM's stay up. Rpm is what makes the fluid pump in the trans do it's part and we all know what happens without lube.

Tony

Towing is OD is not the problem. Allowing the AT to "hunt" for the proper gear is the problem. This repeated shifting into and out of OD creates a tremendous amount of heat very quickly. Upon the AT rebuild, under warranty, the Tech emphaticly stated to never use OD under 55mph when towing in hilly terrian to avoid this condition of the AT hunting the proper gear.

Re:whats the prob w/ pulling in o/d

I have a PSD for now until the summer. But It has exhaust TC and 130hp chip and pulling a 2000lb trailer with 2 4wheelers and a John Deere 6x4 Gator. And my tranny never gets really hot.Even when I run it in OD for the some of the hills. I dont really need to cause I cruise right at 2200-2300 and thats where all my power is. I dont baby it at all unless its cold but thats only until the motor warms up.

i baby mine in most other ways...warming up/idling in neutral, taking it easy when it's cold, keep the converter clutch from slipping, etc.....but otherwise it sees daily WOT shifts constantly 8)

Ray hit the nail on the head. it's the constant shifting that's bad. The tranny fluid in my rig runs about 125 deg F because the TCC stays locked above 30 MPH.
