Hey guys, I found a great deal on a 97 12V. It is already out of the truck so I can't hear it run. I was just wondering what sort of problem areas I should be looking at carefully? The diesel stuff is new to me...normally I'd check spark plugs, look at oil, check compression etc but obviously things are different when looking at a diesel. Any help would be appreciated!

out of the truck?, i guess you mean you have found a good deal on a 97 12v engine. is this correct?, if it is than check the the front timing gear case for oil leaks, and check for the killer dowel pin im sure others will chime in on what else to check.

 

170,000miles. It's very clean, no leaks anywhere. It's was out of a rollover. Externally everything looks great. The guy that's selling it bought the truck from the insurance company for the tranny, t/case and diffes. Since he bought the truck after the accident, he has no history on the truck or maintainance.

Buying an used motor that you can't hear run is gamble but I'd like to reduce the risk as much as I can.
