What KDP kit would you recommend?

Hey Guys,

Looking for a KDP kit to order. Is there a particular kit that you would recommend over the others for reasons like seal quality etc?

I'm learning as I go and would like all the pointers you can give me concerning this project!

Thanks,

Clark

Not really, TST was the first I found. Since then I have found the separate bits and pieces and put my own together.

Use the TST kit for a parts list and buy what you need from Cummins.

bought mine from tst, included the 10mm bolt, the modded washer, red loctite, seal, and gray rtv for the cover seal. instructions are pretty straightforward. remember to place the clear sleeve thru the back of the seal if you get this kit. they just end the instructions with putting in the sleeve but not explaining why, which is to allow crank to slip over seal so its not damaged . 40 bucks when i got mine. worth it. no driving around trying to put it all together.

All you really need is the seal, and some RTV. Gasket is nice, but not needed. I just used a punch and staked the hole instead of making a tab.

What size bolt is used? And does anyone have a part number for that seal?

I have been on the phone with Cummins trying to straiten out what seal to use. Here is the info I have so far. Hope its right.

They offer two types of seals. A regular crankshaft seal or a seal with a wear sleeve. I guess you get the one with the wear sleeve if your crankshaft is worn. The seal itself is smaller on this one, so if you get it, you must use the wear sleeve.

The regular seal is part # 393711 (formerly 3904353) $32.80
Seal with wear sleeve #3802820 $96.48
Timing cover gasket #3918673 $32.78

All part numbers and prices are from Cummins in Salt Lake City.

If you can pound the pin back down so it's recessed or it's already recessed just peen it.
If you can't then make a tab out of a fender washer.
You can find a template here> http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Dowel_Pin/tab.htm

I did my KDP fix in 2003, but I did the fix where you drill a hole in the gear cover and put a small bolt in the gear cover that blocks the dowel from coming out. That was the first fix suggested, and that's the one I did. But I'm thinking about re-doing it, and making a tab this time. Better safe than sorry.

there are other bolts under the timing cover - they all should have loctite on them

I agree, but just out of curiosity, has anyone had one of those back out and cause problems? Or, is it primarily the dowel that is the culprit?
