KDP = Killer Dowel Pin
Read the dowel pin awareness section here http://www.tstproducts.com/index.asp...PROD&ProdID=64
Order the kit or take a big chance and risk major engine damage.

Yeah, I've been putting it off but I think it's about time I take care of the potential problem. As much as I don't really feel like tearing the front of the engine apart I don't feel like wrecking my engine either. This truck has got to last me another 10 years at least. Seeing I only put 4700 miles on it last year I think it'll make another 10 years. I think i'll bite the bullet today and order the kit from TST.

Does everyone recommend getting the new gasket from Cummins or just using the RTV?

It's up to you, either way works fine. In fact newer models don't use gaskets.
I'm personally very comfortable RTV only.
Main thing is to take care of the KDP, it seems like the folks who procrastinate about it are the ones that get bit.

Its just basically a silicone sealant meant for automotive use, it can withstand heat, oils and fuel. It comes with the TST Dowel Pin repair kit, they supply the Ultra Grey.

Should I be doing anything to my pump timing while i'm in there or should I just leave it alone? Is it hard to set the proper timing?

Don't put it off. If you don't want to do it, PAY someone. It is well worth the $300 to have it done. BELIEVE ME

Several different brands, and several different grades from each.

I use the grey Permatex. If they're out of that, I'll grab a tube of black.

(RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing) That's the fancy way of telling you that it will dry, or "skin up".

Well I pulled mine apart today, the pin was sticking out of the case about 1/8". Not to bad but it was working its way out slowly. I drove it back in just below flush, it drives in with decent resistance so I can't believe it actually works its way out. Maybe when everything gets good and hot it moves a little easier. Who knows.

Definatly don't put it off. When I bought my '97 it had 102k on it and dropped before I had the time to get it done at 104k. I got lucky and didn't have extensive damgage, but if you haven't had it done do it asap or you can have someone do it for $150-300.

It is Murphys law that once you have talked about it you should do it right away. I talked to a guy at a tradeshow from the booth beside us. He asked about it and I explained what happens. He was going to book it into our shop on Monday. That night on his way home it fell out That is crappy luck. The point being if you talk about it, fix it right away...........

Well my KDP repair is now done. It took me a total of about 5 hours and that included pulling the radiator completely out. I needed to change the coolant anyway and it gave me more room and allowed me to use an impact wrench to get the balancer bolts out. It was really a pretty easy job, glad I did it. I feel much better now.
