what can a transmission shop tell you?

I would like to find out what my transmission has or needs. Can a trans shop tell you much without tearing out the transmission? I want to do some more bombing, but need to get the transmission in shape. Anyone know any good shops in Utah?

Better do your homework. Tranny shop opinions are like noses, everyone has one. If your tranny is working well, leave it alone. If you want to do some bombin there are plenty of reputable aftermarket companies, such as TST, that can advise you what to do and more importantly , what your tranny can handle.

My two cents

bigbaddiesel:

If you really want to know what is happening inside
your transmission, the best thing to do is take it out
and have it disassembled! By doing that a transmission
shop can thoroughly check the clutch packs, seals,
torque converter etc. for signs of wear.

But, as "mymaur" said, "if the transmission is working
well, leave it alone." You can have the pan removed
and inspect the transmission fluid. It should be colored
mainly red, should not smell "burnt" and should not have
alot of metal or "clutch material" visible in the oil.
Some metal is usually seen, but there should not be
an excess amount of it. You should be changing your
transmission fluid every 10,000-15,000 miles. This
fluid change should include the fluid that stays in the
TC.

I can't recommend a shop in Utah, but "ATS Transmissions"
are located near Denver, Colorado @ 4295 Kipling St.,
Wheat Ridge, Colorado 80033, Phone #: 1-800-949-6002.
I have one of their Stage IV transmissions and am very
happy with it!

---------
John_P

thanks guys. Maybe ill just leave it alone and fix it when it breaks. The fluid is fine and there was no metal shavings last oil change. :-)

Yomitch is right there!
Sadly you see where a lot of these "Chain store" type tranny places get busted by the feds for selling unwarranted repairs every couple of years or so.

With out a doubt, if you are planning on raising your HP, then go with the guys who know these trannys best.

ATS, Suncoast, DTT & Goerand are among the ones to talk to, they can steer you toward something that will make your truck a solid machine.
