what axle 70/80

sorry for a stupid post but i'm thinking of buying an axle to change my truck to 3.55's from 4.10 the truck it is out of is a 1994 dodge ram 2500 4x4 hd turbo diesel 5 speed stick.
i beleive what i have is a dana 70 and this is a dana 80 as far as i know it will bolt in are there ANY bolt up differences u-joint size or snout length i should worry about?
Thanks
Brandon

I think everything will bolt up just fine, you should have a dana 60 in the front and a dana 80 in the rear right now since yours is a 5spd, the auto tranny trucks came with the same front axle and a dana 70 rear axle.

Sorry for the hijack, but is it a problem if one puts a 5-spd in an auto truck and leaves the d 70?

Every 1st gen made with a cummins had a Dana 70.
If your shooting for 450+ hp, then it might be a problem.

The D80 has a longer pinion snout, so your driveline is going to have to be shortened a little. Otherwise, the axle bolts right in.
The both use the same U joints.

There are plently of high-horsepower race trucks still running the D70, so theoretically it isn't a problem.
But since you have that many miles, next time you do a diff oil change look for bearing material, because D70's like eating diff carrier bearings.

Yes, but most if not all of those are autos.
I broke my Dana 70.

What kind of length difference are we talking with the pinion snout? Cuz when I swap trannies I'm going to have to get different driveshafts (off a manual truck) and if I do that then that rear shaft will have been designed for a D80. If I retain the D70 until the "cool stuff for the truck" coffers fill up again, is it going to overextend the shaft?

well i purchased the axle and to fill everyone in there are a few differences the pinion snout is longer and i did get my drive shaft to mate to it but felt like the slip yoke was very compressed. the axle tubes are larger diameter on the 80 and require longer u-bolts and modification to the bottom plates that hold the u-bolts. my truck has a sway bar and load control for the brakes which the new axle does not have mounts for.

so i have a few questions my new 80 has one of the tabs broken off of the pinion yoke that retains the u-joint i plan on replacing the yoke and was wondering if the 70 and 80 pinion yokes are the same and if they are i am also wondering if the 80 uses a crush sleeve or shims to set pinion pre-load.

second how do they attach a rear sway bar to trucks equipped with a Dana 80 my 70 has longer shock mounts that double as mounts for the sway bar but the 80 only has enough room for the shock i was planning of cutting the brackets off of the 70 and putting them on the 80 unless there is a bolt on option that the 80s use for a sway bar.

thanks sorry for the long post
Brandon

When I put my 80 in my truck I had to shorten the driveshaft 1 1/2 - 2 inches

The 70 and 80 yokes are different I had to replace one of those too
The 80 has a much larger pinion and it uses shims
