Smile Went to Cummins today and bought an EXPENSIVE oil change/fuel filter...

Here is a breakdown of the parts I bought...

1 LF3959 Fleetguard $8.84 (Oil Filter)

1 FS19598 Fleetguard $17.50 (Fuel Filter)

3 70509 Premium Blue Oil (Valvoline) $30.90

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question 1: Are these prices O.K.?

Question 2: Which is better? Rotella or Premium Blue?

(Feels good to have Cummins approved parts and fluids in the truck though)

Those prices for the oil and fuel filter are not bad at all. I personally Like rotella T, but everyone has their preferences, also, the price you paid just for those parts is about half of what a dealership charges for just an oil change on your truck. Thats why I never have a problem spending alil more on better products.

RotellaT, RotellaT, RotellaT...that's all you need.

Proven to be the best oil period, 15W/40

I use it in all my diesel equipment, and I reachel high mileage and high hours with no problem whatsoever.

Top of line is a Dodge Cummins with 376,000 miles, and a Case 1845 skidsteer with 14,500 hours (concindence it has a Cummins 4bt motor.... )

If you cannot find Rotella (which is impossible since Walmart sells it and even Menards has it) get Mobil Delvac.

I live in the ridiculously cold north.

I use Premium Blue Extreme with a stratopore oil filter... each oil change (filter + 3 jugs of oil) is about $90 CDN.

Still, when I think about what a dealer/shop would charge for a full synthetic oil change... it makes this sound cheap. Just part of loving the truck.

I get my filters from Geno's in their kits/packages that they sell. Oil from the local autoparts stores and do the work myself. Takes about 30 mins for the oil change and fuel filter change. Just watch the vac lines around the fuel filter area when changing so you dont accidently disconnect one. Haveto look for ways to save some $$$$.

Remember Cummins oil is just another oil logo-ed as Cummins.....the only thing is cummins mite add some additive's to the oil to meet their specs

I worked for a very large truck fleet and my company decided to go to 40000 mile oil changes.....cummin said they would void the warranty unless we used their oil....to make this a short story my company told cummins to prove their oil was better then what we used and they couldn't prove it was better.....so they let us extend our oil changes without voiding the warranty

We where the first large truck fleet to go to no oil changes only filter changes and services our experimental fleet logged 500000 miles before changing the oil.....but oil sampling was done every 40000 miles

Any high grade oil will work just fine in our trucks and synthetic oil is better then dyno-oil

I love Rotella T - but I wanted to try out this oil for a few thousand miles...

So far no smell, which brings a tear to my eye

Its pretty good so far...

I highly doubt I'll buy this oil again unless it a miracle oil...

The prices you paid are good. You might want to upgrade your filter to a LF3894, it's a Stratapore and will work on your truck but might be slightly higher in price. Valvoline Premium Blue is what your truck came from the factory with.

Scott, heres a tip...go to UFA and pick up some Polar Plus 0W40 - its actually Esso XD-3 (a group IV synthetic) - which makes it a better oil than the Premium Blue Extreme (which I believe is only a group 3 synthetic). Doing this will save you $30 or more each oil change and you will be getting a better oil.

Not bad to know... gotta love the UFA!

I think I might switch to that. Do you run it year round? Oil analysis (any suggested locations)? (I've been thinking about this, instead of just emptying the sump - I'm betting the change intervals are conservative based on the worst conditions (driving, environment, engine condition, oil quality).

Nothing wrong with Rotella,BUT Delo 400 is a better oil and costs about the same, also Shaeffers x200 is only slightly higher cost and a league above rotella, and neither smell at all.
