Well, it finally happened
Well, it finally happened
...5th gear nut, that is
I was pulling my trailer down to a race when it happened, just kicked out on level ground with the cruise control on. Truck has 215k on it - I just figure that's a worthwhile data point for anybody else. I've put about 55k on it - no clue how the previous owner drove. I've been careful not to lug it in 5th & all that, but from what I have read, its bound to happen at some point.
I was planning on getting the trans rebuilt this winter, but don't have the cash (or time) to do it right now. I know all the 5th gear nut 'fixes' are more of a band-aid than a solution, but of all of them - which one do you guys think is the best? I was pretty disappointed to see that quad4x4 isn't making their mainshaft kits anymore, guess I will have to pick my transmission guy's brain about the best way to prevent it when it gets rebuilt.
May 12th is pretty much my first (only!) free day for a while, so I am hoping to get this done then. Doesn't look like its really *that* bad to pull the t-case, 5th gear housing, and do any of the 5th gear fixes.

No way it is coming loose short of total carnage, and it could be reused on your rebuild.

It's the only way to go for a permanent fix.
