Valve springs? and AFC?
Those are 2 different places on the engine, do you mean changing the valve springs to the heavier ones or changing the spring in the AFC?
If you looking for changing the valve springs, it looks like another member here is going to be doing a write on it in the 1st gen section, I saw picture from BC847 changing valve springs that where recently posted.

Changing to 3k or 4k governor springs through the pump top requires removing the AFC housing & fuel plate. I tried it once and gave up.
Bosch put a nice port on the side specifically for servicing the governor springs. Very easy from there.
Best instructions I know for going in through the side port are found on PDR http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechGSK12V.htm

If you really want to go down from the top take a look here.

I have been in from the top under the AFC, and the side, the side is much easier. It does seem scary though...
