Is the factory turbo on a 96 Dodge Cummins a Garrett model, and if so, what
type or size??

Is "Hilstedt" (spelling may be off) an aftermarket, oversize turbo?
(Looking at a 96 that has 4in. exhaust and this type turbo. Seems to be
a larger body).

No it should be a Holset if it is stock.

 

It's a Holset and should have a tag on it.

 

All '96-'98s came with a Holset HX35W with a 12 sq cm turbine housing

 

Also the stock HX35 have a 3" outlet.
