Are you sure the oil did not come from the K&N filter?

Go to the Holset site and download the instructions. You'll have to Google it as I did not save the page. Not too bad to do. Mine is due but I just have not found the time yet. ANY side play is not good and may weep oil. A good point was brought up by hayseed, do you have an oiled filter element? A lot of people over oil these and the turbo will suck the oil out of it in time. Another thing is remove the lower boot going to the intercooler,,look for oil in intercooler. If any there it has been weeping for awhile.

B'

I had the exact same thing when I ran a K&N. It was new from the box and coated both the turbo and intake hose from the air box with a film of oil.

ANY side play is not good and may weep oil.
You have it backwards, slight side to side play is allowable, front to rear isn't.
Side to side 0.013 - 0.020
Front to rear 0.001 - 0.005

Download turbo repair manual here

Dial indicator... As posted above, side to side isn't bad - it's front to back that's the problem. The fins aren't hitting the compressor housing when you wiggle it side to side are they? If you really concerned, you could have HTT rebuild it for you too. If your in a hurry and can't have the truck down for a couple of weeks, overnight ship the center section to them and have them check it out and overnight it back to you. Only delay is if they have a backlog. Call HTT, they'll guide you and sell you only what you need.

My method is crude but works.
You can feel the allowable side to side by wiggling it but shouldn't be able feel fore to aft.
