i have a 96 4x4 5spd the shifter moves freely but the trans is stuck in first gear tried to "speed shift" to try to line the shifter back with the forks and tried just straight "popping" the clutch the shifter wont go into the 1st gear slot but the trans is still locked in first its not the clutch we can drive it around the yard need help please any suggestions?

 

mine used to hang in 5th we would take the top off to get it unstuck. dont use the shifter cuz the will bend

 

so u have to drop the trans every time it does this is there a better fix this is our work truck and its a lot of stuff to drop every time it doesnt feel like coming out of gear with the shifter

 

no take the shifter top off the tranny in the cab. takes about 30 min round trip

 

we did that but we couldnt get the top plate off the trans without dropping it but thats ok we dropped all of it and got all the shift forks back on the center notch and got the large "wheel" in the middle of the trans slid back into nutrel tested while out of the truck now it goes in every gear and out just fine if u have a shortcut on how to get the top plate off while still in truck please let me know thanks for the info not sure i would have know where to look or what to do without it again thanks

 

on my 5 spd i'm talking about the top where the shifter mounts. the part you have to remove in order to drop the tranny. mine only hung usaully when it was time to change the fluid, which is every 50k or 6 months if you do a lot of towing plus run at least 1 qt over the required amount

 

yeah we took out the shift tower and looked down inside the trans but no matter what we did it would not come out of the gear but thats ok we got it all out, fixed, and put back together and now it runs great somehow we must have bumped the shifter when we were putting in the new 24valve seats and the new rubber floors (easier to clean when we go mudding) hope it doesnt happen again thanks for the help
