Transmission Fix or Luck?

My father-in-law's '95 Dodge has been "searching thru gears", similar to what many have fixed with a TPS or Transmission Temp Sensor. Today, I cleaned the connection on the Trans Temp Sensor and something else (looked like a sending unit) on the transmission. The connections were really oily. Then I removed the TPS, cleaned the connection, and reinstalled. I also hooked up the kickdown cable (it wasn't connected). After driving the truck for about 30 minutes, the truck is shifting like it is supposed to, and the transmission light is no longer on in the dash. Would bad or oily connections cause the transmission to seemingly upshift and downshift for no reason, and cause the transmission light to come on? Do you think that what I did will fix the problem, or did I get lucky. Thanks.

If the light was coming on the problem was likely the temp sensor. The TPS won't set off the light.
Oil isn't very conductive to electricity but perhaps dirt imbedded in it was.
Hopefully it's fixed.

I didnt know we had a "kickdown", I thought all we had was the line pressure cable..

The TV cable (kickdown) won't set off the warning light. The only thing that sets of the light is high fluid temps or a short that mimics high temps.

change the fluid as well now since you've been burning it up...the high temps have probably made it loose some of its properties making the fluid overrall less effective
