Transfer Case Needed - Question about compatibility
Transfer Case Needed - Question about compatibility
Hi,
First of all, I just discovered this forum and I really like it..!!!
I have a 94 Ram 2500 4x4 with the NP241 Transfer case (52099041). Recently, the driveshaft bolts sheared and the front shaft put a hole in the case. I need to find the front half of the case or even a replacement case so I can get back on the road.
My question is...do I have to find a 52099041 model NP241 DLD case, or will any NP241 case half fit on mine? Also, is any other model able to fit and hook up to my linkage?
What other problems might I have?
Any help is greatly appreciated..!!!!
Thanks,
Joel in Idaho.

Get the HD
I have a 94. I replaced my 241 DLD with a 241 HD or something like that.
I kept cracking the case on mine. Probably due to my pushing a trailer up hill while turning the wheels.
Anyhow, I found out that there was (in the early days) a problem with the first transfer cases. It was mostly with trucks that were doing snow plow duty (sorta like the duty my truck had when pushing that heavy boat).
The one tons and later trucks used a thicker case.
I don't remeber the exact number from the case but the heavier unit came with a PTO port in the side.
I think you can also swap in a 271 which came later and has a higher rating.
I needed to connect mine to a Gear Vendor unit so I didn't go that route as it would have entailed drive shaft changes and more money but if you don't have that as a problem I would go for the 271.
I think the DLD was good for 12,500 pounds; the HD was good for 14,000 and the 271 is good for over 17000.
I repaired my old 241 and have it sitting on a shelf. I fixed the cracks and gusseted the case. I'll keep it as a spare or sell it to someone who is worthy.
Good luck.

both my trucks have the 241 HD's I think the output shaft is diffrent on them so if you were to replace them you'd need a new slip yoke. maybe not. the 271 however is a lot bigger and will require your front shaft to be lengthed and the rear to be shortend. You will need a new slip yoke if you get a 271. However a 271, 241 hd if you were to buy them are either the same price or the 271 is cheaper. I forget wich
