Transfer case issues

I recently had to put a transfer case in my 2000 2500 cummins I was told a 96 would work and it has to a point but seems like the selector is backwards now 2h is all te way forward then one back is 4 h then neutral then 4l no idea what it could be it only hooks up one way is there a difference in 96 to a 2000 ? It's np241 dld

Hmm, didn't know that they are different, but they are. Your 96 shifts exactly like my 97 does, and it is all original.

What order did your old 2000 case go?

I never looked, but since it is exactly backwards from the early ones, could it be that the 2000 lever was bolted on 180 degrees? Do you still have your old TC?

If so, check the lever and see if it is up versus down?

You could probably switch the lever and go back to the original shifting.

Well other kicker is its not exact backwards 2 high is all the way forward now it should have been 4 high if it was true backwards

I've worked on several of these cummins and never seen something like this and low and behold its my truck lol but other weird thing is when u shift into 4 low and back to neutral then try to go into high gears it wants to bring like a sound of a stick shift not synching so then have to shut truck off in neutral and push it in then all is ok again not good with transmission stuff at all so I dunno if the chain could be looser than mine was or what help!!!! Lol

When the transfer case is in neutral and the (auto) trans is in gear, it will spin the input of the transfer case. Can do it with transmission in neutral as well, not as bad though. So then you're trying to shift the transfer case to high range, locking the input and output shafts together....which can be at VERY different speeds! Don't do that. Also don't shift from drive to park with transfer case in neutral while running, it's like throwing it into park while running down the road. Doesn't break anything but makes an ugly noise. I used to shut the truck off in neutral to get out of 4L.

My 98 from front to rear is 4L, N, 2H, 4H closest to driver.

All my american rigs, ctd- chevy- ect require a quick shift between low and high range with the rig in netural or the rig off to avoid massive grinding. My Toyota truck and 4runner can be shifted from low range to high range at any speed, makes a great ultra low gear when pulling the boat with its manual hubs- friends are amazed at my 10 speed toyota (i actually only run 1st and 2nd low range, then shift back to 1st high range and start over once at 10mph)

Glad you caught that, and yes, that is the case.

Hmm, now I need to do some research, because I actually would like to have your shift pattern, lots of times I want to throw it in fast, and it is quite a reach to pull the lever back while you are driving........
