Trans Fluid

Question. I checked the trans oil level the other day on my 98 12v and found it a full qt. low. After filling it seems to shift smoother? Is that possible or am I feeling something that's not there?

All though I dont have a 98, it seems that a small amount will make a difference even when they holds 15 quarts or so.
