TPS Threads Fun (20 pages worth!)
TPS Threads Fun (20 pages worth!)
OK, I've been having so much fun reading all the TPS threads telling me how to clean my TPS here in this form in order to correct my shifting woes. I just called Advanced Auto (B'Ham AL) and they quoted me $33 for a new one. Am I missing something or are all the threads I read old and NOW no one cleans TPS's anymore since cheap new ones are available?
I think something fishy is going on , Go make sure that is the right TPS , IIRC they are 200+$ from the dealer , which is the only place i know to get them.
Are you sure they didn't look up a gasser?

They asked if it was a diesel and I said yes. I've got the pics from all the DIY TPS Cleaning instructions so I'll take them with me and at least make sure it looks similar.
Just called Advance's main store and they are showing two different TPS for a 12V Cummins (1996) one is $33 and the other $150 and they don't look alike and of course they don't have the $150 in stock. I'm going to go down there and take a look at it. Is it possible that someone has built a better (and cheaper) mouse trap?

I would like to see one for $33, let us know. Look up member pappyman and he has photos in his gallery of one torn apart, they are easy to clean with two holes one on top and one on the bottome, with the dielectric cleaner and then seal back up. or take all the way apart and regrease with some dielectric greas.Goodluck,Rick
I had the same thing happen - not sure which parts store it was. I drove down (to pick up 20 of them
) but it was the wrong model. The correct one was over $200.00. I think there is a typo in some of parts software.

Nope, wrong one
I went down to Advanced Auto and low and behold, it was not the one we need. The correct TPS is $157 and of course not in stock. Got a can of cleaner and will give cleaning it a shot.
Now O'Reilly Auto parts has a life time guarantee for $168. I guess it'll be the last one I pay for (for this truck and maybe the next...)

. My transmission would shift from second straight into overdrive. So I went through most of the pages of the info on the TPS. First I verified the linkage measurement. It was right. So I checked the TPS voltage, which is supposed to be 1.0 volt (+or- .2 volts)at idle position. Mine was .2 volts at idle. I cleaned the TPS and elongated the holes it on so I could rotate it. I installed it and checked the voltage again, rotated it, and I still could not get significantly higher voltage. According to the service manual I needed to replace the TPS. I took it off and was staring at the engine and I noticed that the flat bar that comes off the throttle linkage and goes into the TPS had groves worn into it from the pointy ears on the TPS. This was on a Saturday night and nothing was open, so I started to look around. I found a 1/16" piece of steel that I cut to fit inside the hole on the TPS to make a shim. I carefully put the TPS back on and checked the voltage and adjusted it so it was a 1 volt. Took it for a test ride and lo and behold I have 3rd gear back. I have only put on a few hundred miles, but so far so good.
