Interesting. I don't see where he countered your statement at all except to say that he's had good luck towing with the product.[/quote]

Jack,

I’m not here to argue semantics with you, he implied my assessment of the TC was incorrect, but he never once addressed my point of contention with the Pro-Torque (the milled stator). Therefore his view was counter to what I said, it seems strait forward to me. :

I applaud you for sticking up for your friends as you do; unfortunately it clouds your assessment of the threads. If it were I in Johns place and he in mine, your stands would be different, since he is your friend and you don’t know me. Not to worry, this is a human characteristic and everyone does it. You just need to be more objective in your handling of others that you don’t know.

Sounds like another vast, right wing conspiracy doesn't it? :
Coming from a leftist like you, this may be correct.

So you're saying it's wrong for someone to have a different opinion than you??? YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME! You stated in your post, Animal, that you thought the Pro Torque was poor at towing. John countered that by saying that he thought the converter towed heavy loads well. At NO TIME did he ever bring up the issue of the stator or counter anything you said except for the fact that he thought it towed well. Frankly, his opinion would be valid even if he thought the stator was milled, custom, plastic, or even being turned by a monkey inside. The last time I checked the freedom to form your own opinion was legal in the United States. My opinion is that the Pro Torque does pretty darn good for what it is. You have to remember that not everyone wants 800 horsepower to desires to run 11 second quarter miles. For guys who don't want to spend a fortune, this converter is a viable option. As for your towing problem I suggest you look into some more power... looks like your truck is a little weak to me.

You seem to cry conspiracy and foul play when everyone jumped on you (I mean... we must be jumping on you unfairly... you can't be wrong :), but the simple fact is that everyone who responded knows John very well... especially me. It sounds like you understand the idea of friends backing up someone when they're being attacked though.

John

Re:torque convertor - which one?

Let me guess, you’re the little one. : Can anyone read and understand what is said. ??? I agreed with all the points John said about the Pro-torque. What I said was the milled stator had poor torque multiplication and other companies had better produces for a little more money if towing was the issue. John never addressed the milled stator issue in any of his assessments of the Pro-torque TC. So I figured he didn’t understand what the stator was for or what I was trying to say, it appears I was wrong, it looks as though people just can’t read.

As to the attack, the only one attacked here was I for pointing out the milled stators poor efficiency and apparent lack of knowledge, along with my willingness to provide data to alleviate the apparent problem. Also no one has rebutted my assessment of the milled stators poor efficiency with any technical data, only it pulls up hills just fine. Again the stator has nothing to do with moving a load past the first couple of seconds of starting the load moving. The heavier the load the more apparent this flaw is.

If there are no technical rebuttals to this flaw, I have nothing more to say to you or anyone else.

Yep.... all 6'5", 215 lbs of me... the little one

I agreed with all the points John said about the Pro-torque.

Ohhh NO! You did not Mr. Animal. You said this:

It worked well for daily driving but worked poorly for towing heavy.

John_P on the other hand countered with this statement:

After reading what "Animal" posted, I wanted to let you know that I towed regularly with that "Pro-Torque" Converter and never had any problems pulling either my enclosed cargo racing trailer or my 10,000 lb.flat bed trailer loaded with my tractor.

Now, can you read those two quotes and seriously tell me that they agree?? I didn't think so. If you'll notice, his post makes no rebuttal or mention to the fact that the Pro Torque converter has a milled stator. He simply adressed your statement that it tows poorly (which everyone else seems to disagree with). The simple fact that he did not mention the stator gives you no right to fly off the handle and call someone ignorant and assume they have no idea how something works. I'm sure you know what is said about assumptions.... (in case you don't, they're the mother of all F - ups.)

For your technical description, it is flawed itself. The stator is actually being utilized ANY time the impeller speed is greater than turbine speed in the TC. The stator IS most effective when accelerating from a stop (due to the greatest difference in rotor speeds), but when accelerating from a roll or even crusing down the street out of lockup, the stator is working for you. As for efficiency of a milled stator, it's not too terrible, but it suffers from having only a very narrow "good" efficiency range.

Re:torque convertor - which one?

Animal,
I havent visited this thread in a couple days (due to working 12 hour days)
when I first read it your comments they stuck out to me, I wanted to see what happend next? Maybe a retraction for statements like "you are ignorant" "lack of knowledge", then "little one".

Animal you can express opinions here and educate us with your knowledge of stators, but dont personally insult people.

When you attack my friends, I take it personally.

Re:torque convertor - which one?

Sorry guys, but I must agree with Deezilla. I have been watching this thread and it has gotten a little out of hand. The thread starter was asking for good sound advice AND opinions about how to proceed with a transmission upgrade. I doubt that it was intended to be a personal war of words. I do understand that sometimes we all get carried away with emotions, but lets all try to take a couple of steps back and relax. IF YOU GUYS DON'T TRY TO GET ALONG YOU WILL HAVE TO SIT ON THE COUCH AND HOLD HANDS FOR AN HOUR. That was an old punishment my mother used to use on us six kids.
Tom

Re:torque convertor - which one?

As an owner of a stock auto, I follow these forums hoping to get some idea of what to do regarding transmission mods. No matter what site they are on, they always degenerate into the same old crap. I have made my decision. When the time comes for transmission mods, I will be trading my truck in on a six speed or a Ford.

Re:torque convertor - which one?

Well here is my completely biased opinion, because I don't have anything to compare too. I have the "Scheid" tranny. This includes the Pro-Torque, a BD valve body, and a Pressure lock. I do everything with this truck from daily driving to HEAVY towing. By heavy towing i am talking about 28~30k lbs total weight. I have no complaints with the way this tranny combo has performed. Does this converter work at low speeds startin a big load? I would have to say yer darn tootin it does or i would be very sorely upset with my truck, however my opinion is if anyone ask I would tell them the Pro-torque works just fine. Milled stotor and all

There is also torque multiplication when the truck it costing and you nail the throttle, it’s just less and for a shorter time.

To prove my point, if you took the stator out and tried to go from a standing start the truck will not move. Now if you pushed the same truck up to say 15mph and nailed the throttle the truck will increase speed but at a very slow rate. As you get to highway speed the truck will act the same as it does now, but increasing speed will still take more time.
Re:torque convertor - which one?

Wow did this Thread go off on a tangent or what??? As the original poster I held back and waited for the heat to die down. Anyway here is what is going to be put in the truck. (I want to thank EVERYONE for all of their opinions and recommendations.)

The Convertor is being custom built by a local person. The owner of the Tranmission Shop that is doing the tranny rebuild and I went to talk to this person based on some gossip that he builds TCs. He builds a very nice unit. Custon stator, billet cover, carbon fibre clutches, yada yada yada. Based on what I have read from everyone, it will hold up nicely. Like most of the others it is not Cheap at $800 but he'll warranty it for 3 years/unlimited mileage and he said he will pay for towing from anywhere if it is the cause of failure.

That works great for me since I tow 25-30k miles per year with my fifth wheel race car trailer.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice and articles. I now know more about auto trannys then I ever wanted!

Don Miller
Re:torque convertor - which one?

How did I miss this juicy thread? I kept passing over it thinking it was a mundane read about who bought what and why......looks like I should pay more attention.

Anyway, I have been called and call people ignorant from time to time. I dont consider it a cut down at all. Its a descriptive term. If someone is ingnorant of something it just means they dont know, not that they are stupid, etc.

My read of Animals post was not one of slander or attack. Im convinced his intentions were not malcious.

Of course I could just be ignorant too I bet that Animal was ignorant of the fact that some folks think the word ignorant is a cut down.

Don~
