Torque Converter Install???

Torque Converter Install???
Was thinking about picking up a good converter and was wondering how hard it would be to install. Can i just pull the tranny back enough to do the swap or take it all the way out. Also any good suggestions on converts? Was hoping to spend around $700. I no thats cheap but i'm in debt and want one now but not looking to spend $1200.

I know on my 94 I just had a new trans and torque convertor put in and the trans did have to be taken out inorder to unbolt the convertor. I put in the torque multiplier from BD since I have them right here down the street.
I am sure the others on this will have some info on some good convertors for you and which are good ones too.

If youre just going to be installing a converter, you should be able to just pull the trans back from the motor a couple feet. The converter sits on the input shaft and you should be able to just swap them out, but really its not much more work to go ahead and pull the whole tranny.
Dave Goerend sells a single disc for around $600 or $650 i think. However i dont think they have a whole lot more holding power than the stock converters, but they do have a much lower stall, which makes it feel like a whole different truck. I would highly recommend going with one of his triple discs though. IIRC he sells a triple disc with a 100K mile warranty for $1050. It should be able to hold about anything you wanna throw at it. If it were me i would definitely wait until i had enough $$$ to do it right the first time. I guess you could always buy one of his single discs and see how that worked out for you, if not dave will give you a full refund towards the purchase of one of his triple discs Cant beat that with a stick! I suggest giving dave a call and just discussing it with him. Very easy to talk to and great customer service.

Just starting to do my homework on trannys, but from my recent reading, it is HIGHLY suggested that if you go with a "better" torque converter you need to give it more fluid pressure. The way to do this is with either a new valve body or a shift kit. Otherwise, the pressures won't be there to make the new converter work optimally. KD
