timing / idle help

ok, long story short, i put in my 3GSk a while back, not paying nearly enough attention, made a mess of things and am now tired of 2 foot driving.
I need to get this either cleared up myself or finally into a pump shop and get it taken care of.
Here is what its doing- I put in the 3GSK, thought i counted clicks, got it all together, seemed to rev much higher, much easier. the downside, wasnt idling at all. I messed with 1 click out, one in, 2 clicks, spent the better part of a day messing with various settings and idle stop adjustments.
If i get it to idle in park, it will die in gear. if i get it to a point where it idles in gear, when i go into N or P it free revs way to high.
I need to find that happy medium where it idles and stays at that idle in gear.
For all i know there is a kickdown that is not working when the trans is put into a drive gear?

so, my questions are these
- Is there a kickdown that may not be functioning when i select a gear?
- should i do my timing, or have it done prior or after setting idle, i have a suspicion it has slipped

thanks

I think you should remove the GSK and start over paying more attention.
Sounds like you missed a shim or measurement.
Try these instructions, they're the best> http://www.pacbrake.com/PDF/L5658.PDF

Should i not worry about the timing and get the idle set first?

That's what I would do since you admit you might not been paying full attention.

i agree, my only concern is that while attempting to get it to idle right i monkeyed with so many click settings and idle arm adjustments, that ill never be able to find the baseline again.
