Berner, back to your original question...the bolt spacing looks to be about 1-7/8" center to center. I just tabbed my buddys KDP last night and thought I'd measure that for you... I think I would still make a puller of some sort, but maybe find some 1/2" flat iron.

Thanks Don. I think I'm going to make one up too. I imagine 1/2" thick mild steel would be plenty strong enough.

Are you going to weld a nut to it or tap it?

Old information, but anyone looking for the measurement -- I measured 1.875" across the holes, 7/8 = .875, so that looks accurate.

This was 3 years ago. I bought a steering wheel puller. The gear popped off easy.

It doesnt matter how long ago it was, the search function still finds the posts I drilled some holes in a 3/8" thick chunk, gonna grab some M8s Monday and give it a shot.
