Timing a 12 V

I have been working on a 502 chevy with PFI and have it running finally and now would like to start working on my 96 Dodge 4x4. Do a little super tuning. I have gauges to install, boost and Pyro and also have a 4 inch exhaust to put on. Would also like to change the timing. Can I take my truck to the local Dodge dealer and have them time it to say 16 degrees or is that something they won't want to do? What should be the cost for something like this? I have had the truck for about 16 K and it now has 144K on it and I don't know when anything was done as far as valve adjustment etc.

I dont think I would take it to a DC dealer for timing.....a Cummins shop is a better choice. As well, just about any reputable diesel repair shop should be able to time it and get it right.

For sure all dealers and most Cummins shops by emissions law will only adjust your timing to the factory specs. If you want 16° you're going to have to find another mechanic. Expect to pay around $200.

$200????!?!?!

I GOOD mechanic can do it in less than an hour and should only charge you for an hour's labor or less. For most shops that means roughly $60-$70.

WS is right $70.00 is the normal charge here in So. Cal. Dealers won't and can't advance timing above stock, you know about liability issues. I charge $90.00 but take my time and recheck twice and will show a customer how to do it so they can do it next time themselves.

Wish I could take you up on the timing but it will be hard to get my truck to your shop in Downey. I would have to ship it via barge from the Big Island. It would be cheaper to fly you over here to do the work.

Have you found anyone on the island who will change the timing?
I also live in Kona and am interested in changing the timing on my 96 2500 2wd.

Hi Ken,

No I haven't made any headway with that. I know a guy who works on diesels in the boats and maybe he could help but have not contacted him yet.
