Throttle problem?

Recently bought a '96 Ram, with the diesel; it has 18K on it and is in very nice condition. I think the accel. pedal-to-throttle linkage cable needs adjusted, but the local dealer disagrees with me. Starting at the bottom of a very steep grade, with 800 lbs in the bed, I started up the hill, gradually pushing the accel. pedal to the floor. I eventually achieved 41 MPH, but at no time did the RPM exceed 2100, and the truck stayed in 2nd gear until I crested the hill and let off the
accel. I examined the cable running from the pedal to the throttle linkage, and I believe there is approx. 1/4" or less of travel (slack) in the cable which is causing me to physically hit the floor with the pedal before I achieve full open throttle at the throttle linkage. This throttle is not rocket-science, and mechanically, it seems pretty clear to me what is happening - and I restored a '52 ****** to mint condition, so I feel qualified in my assessment - but the dealer really has me scratching my head.

BTW: A recall fix on this throttle was accomplished 14 months ago, and there is no warranty remaining on the truck.

I could draw a diagram to explain if it helps.

Thanks for your help.
Jim

Re:Throttle problem?

You found a '96 with only 18,000 miles on it??? Lucky you. If you want to find out if you need to adjust the linkage have someone sit in the seat and push the pedal to the floor while you check to see if the pump lever is getting full travel. If you don't have anyone for the inside part you should be able to use a stick and wedge it between the seat and pedal.
Tom

Re:Throttle problem?

You can adjust the slack out....I had a similar problem but it was because the first time they did the throttle recall the mechanic screwed it up...at the time a mechanic at a dealership saw it when I was in for other work so they redid the throttle recall completely again and got it right the second time...but it dont take much to fix it yourself

Re:Throttle problem?

You need to take a measurement from the point where the throttle cable passes throught the retainer to the ball stud where the cable attaches ... this measurement needs to be 5" the adjustment is made on the throttle rod ... hope this helps.
