Three Cyl Start

So whats the deal with this three cylinder start thing that i always hear about? I have always thought thats just what you called it when the engine would "lope" on a cold morning but i have a 12 valve and from what i have read this is only available on the 24 valves. I also have another Q since im here. Does any one know how to get a high idle kit (other than the ice scraper) on a 12 valve?

You can use a choke or throttle cable mounted on the knee panel for a high idle.

I'm new to the diesel thing but from what I understand the 3 cyl. cold start is only for the 24 valvers with a computer that controls the injectors.
There was a thread about the high idle cable install not to long ago, I tink he said it cost him under $15 to do.
I personally like my broom stick to the pedal/seat mount.

I did the high idle on mine. Cost 10 bucks for a choke cable. I don't know how I ever went without it. Much more adjustable than the broom stick I was using.

Hey Travis, I just noticed you have a Daytona 600. I just sold my 03 Triumph Speed Four in Roulette green with 1300 miles on it to a good buddy of mine. 2 weeks later he dropped it, now it needs a bunch of work.
I miss that bike already.

I find the ice scraper works quite well!

I've got power seats so I just set the scraper down there and adjust the seat till she's runnin about 1200-1300 rpms.

I've got the 3 cylinder start feature... Except I don't want it I've got an air leak somewhere and it only bleeds off of a few cylinders. It takes a couple seconds for it to smooth out in the morning.

As far as the high idle, I use a pipe in between the seat and pedal, but I have really thought about trying to fab up a solenoid as you say that you can just adjust the linkage rod to tune in the RPM. If I ever do it I will certainly post it on here

On all of the ditch witch machines that i have run the throttle is operated by a soledoid like thing that is variable position. It almost looks like it might have a worm gear on an electric motor and a toothed shaft that moves in and out when 12v is applied to the motor. Ive been thinking of that as an option but havent checked to see how pricey it would be.

I took a solenoid from an old GM Quadra-jet carb and fabbed up a plate that bolts to the timing cover. the plunger pushes on the throttle plate. I can adjust the length of the plunger to control the high idle speed. I'll try to take a picture later.

Now that's usin' the ole noggin'. Take a good piece off a good tried and true Chevrolet and put it on a Cummins. The 6.2 Chebby diesels also have one of these and the plunger runs clear through the body of the selenoid to allow easy adjustment!!

3 cyl mode is for 24valve'ers only. Electronically they can go into that mode for improved warmup rather than squirting tinier amounts of fuel into 6 cyls and taking forever to warmup.
24valves can also be reprogrammed to a preset fast idle rpm too! You program the rpm and toggling a high idle wire into the 'puter causes her to rap up to that rpm. 1200rpm would be nice .

Not available on 12valves... But then, we doan need no steenkin' cumpooter to tell a 12v engine how to run either! .
