Talked to a Cummins mechanic Re:KDP pin
He said it is more likely to fall off if the bolts on the housing are loose. Other than that he has not seen a problem in "a long time"<br><br>Odds are with you 85-95% it won't fall off.<br><br>Mark at Cummins Southeastern Power in Tampa Fla #: (813) 626-1101

P.S....He said it would coast about $1000.00 to fix if it came out...I didn't ask if that included the aluminum housing that usually cracks. Perhaps it does because he said the cam shaft only comes out a little to fix.<br><br>They get $72.50 an hour labor.

Just a note here:
I paid Cummins $400.00 to fix my KDP using the Cummins Tab.
New seals and gasket plus my Cummins shop get $95.00 per hour.
After the mechanic took off the front cover, the pin had barely even moved. I was in no danger of losing the pin.
However, it is worth every penny of the $400.00 to know that the pin is now fixed and will never be a problem again!
With my kind of luck, that pin would've never fallen out... until I was out in the middle of Nevada... 300 miles past nowhere! Security of knowing its fixed is well worth the money spent.
Rich.

Everyone that is gambling with the KDP and all the poor slobs that never heard of it, are really taking their chances. Easy fix for the home mechanic and relatively cheap to have it done. As someone said, the peace of mind is worth every penny.

We have killed many, many KDPs up here in the northwest, and continue to do so. Its all free, costs about an hour or two of your time. <br><br>We have done 1st gen thru 2nd gen '99s....

Can someone give me a step by step procedure in checking my KDP?<br><br>I'm just worried about putting everything back together when I'm done. I'm the type of guy that looks at the picture and not the instructions, but for this I will read carfully.

I have done 2 ISB's in a Freightliner which had the gear housing cracked due to vibration and 1 B series that had a KDP failure, and all 3 had to have the cam out.

They just pull the cam gear off with a puller and re-install it after thye replace the gear case. Stick the gear in an oven at 350º-400º for about an hour and the gear slides right back on.<br><br>Takes a lot of time off the price tag.

Yeah, I knew you could do it that way, just wondering if there was some other way they were doing it since he said it would only have to come out a little. I can see why pulling the cam gear would be much easier in a Dodge instead of the cam. But on the Freightliners, its a straight shot out the front for the cam to come out.

Re:Talked to a Cummins mechanic Re:KDP pin
Maybe he is right? only 5-15% of all engines will have this problem. Let me see over a million CTD built, so at that even number, and at his 5-15%, thats 50,000-150,00 engines that will have a problem, according to your source. Hey thats alot of mad, can't dive my baby, got of dip in the pocket people out there. And sure the odds are with me, but some how I don't feel the love, no I think I'll just fix mine thank you.

KDP's can and do drop....I have been following the diesel sites for quite a while now......this problem is more common than you would imagine. Don't you think youd be able to sleep better at night with it fixed?? - I know I would.
