Swap a 47RE to 48RE

Hello all,

I am new to the group.

Lots of great info here.

With that I am hoping some of you can chime in hear and help steer me in the right direction in working out a plan to replace or repair my transmission on my 1998 2500 12 Valve with 220,000 miles on that currently has a 47RE. Basically, It would only go up to 55 MPH. I replaced the accumulator spring and servos in the valve body and adjusted the bands. Now it hardly moves at all. Ugg.

Anyways, as I am thinking of keeping this truck for quite a while and may be towing a fifth wheel later on down the road. Therefore, I was thinking of replacing the 47RE with a more heavy duty 48RE. Is that something I can do as a "direct swap?"

What would be things that I would need to do to make this work?

Or what do you suggest I do to make the truck better and stronger then before?

Thanks for your input,

Jeff

ok I can only tell you what I was told by a shop I trust . I was going to have a 47 rh up graded to 48 and it can be done . this is expensive but I did not care as I just wanted a good transmission .I was going to have the roller bearing thrust washer installed also . the front pump is expensive also . IF you could find a 48 to use as a core that might bring down the cost . The 47rh is a week transmission in my option so I though it was a good choice to do that . However I just went to a g56 . The videos on power driven diesel shows them installing the roller bearings in the planets I think and I also have seen this done on a video at a diesel shop in Canada .

Why not just rebuild the 47with better parts and mods. The 47 is a fairly weak trans in oem form, it cant hold up to much abuse. or power additions. Way back then many transmission shops made a lot of money upgrading the 47's You had DTT, ATS, Suncoast, Goerend to name a few who had figured out how to make them work reliably and with longevity. I know I had my 2001 rebuilt by DTT back in 03 and 275k miles later it is still running just fine and that is with towing a fifth wheel and 400hp( I know no big deal in todays standards but back then that was well over stock form of 225hp). My bil now owns it and it is still working fine for him as well. I personally would not change to a 48 or 5 speed or 6 speed manual. Why try and reengineer the vehicle there are proven ways to get longevity out of a 47. It wont necessarily be cheap to do it right but neither is swapping in a manual or a 48. Dtt is gone now, ATS is still around but for me personally at this point I would look for a Goerend installer. Goerend has proven itself over the years as have some others. Do some searching on here you will surely find threads extolling the virtues of a variety of trans builders including goerend, ats and suncoast again to just name a few

That's true as I bought a used g 56 the first of this year and had it gone through by a shop in Fort Worth . I think I have around 3k in it and I spend more to install it of course . I looking forward to having a manual as I never had any thing but a stock transmission I really don't care for the pitiful convertor especially in fluid coupling , the 750 rpm gear splits . But a built convertor might be a different no ldea .

Yes the converter is one of the main things that needs to be upgraded.
