starting issue

Well it occours randomly it will start fine for a week then it will act up. It will continually crank and not fire and then after several tries it will just start right as you turn the key on your fouth try or so. It didn't do it when I was getting the bombs done on the truck then I got home and it did so I couldn't let the mechanic see. He said the overflow is new however so it couldn't be that. Also throttle input dosent affect the starting.

Sounds like it could be a bad fuel shutdown relay

Wana12v,

I had a similar starting problem earlier this summer. I did several searches here and ultimately found out it was the fuel shutdown relay that activates the pull-up circuit in the fuel shutdown solenoid. There were times when I could get it started after turning the ignition switch on and off a few times but eventually it got so bad that it wouldn't start at all - just kept cranking and no run. I checked the "usual suspects" like the corroded terminal on the blue wire (fusible link that feeds 12 volts to the shutdown relay) and other wires - all were good. That lead me to the conclusion that the relay wasn't activating the pull-up coil in the solenoid but the solenoid would hold in the run position if I physically pulled it up to the run position and the truck would start immediately when I turned the key to the start position. I bought my replacement relay from Foster Truck (mentioned here and on DTR website). Their web URL is http://www.fostertruck.com/. The relay is $20 plus shipping - the OEM from Dodge would have cost me $57 plus tax! Hope this helps.

Steve

I agree with Rocky

I replaced my fuel shutdown solenoid and havent had that problem since. Check the connections as well on the wiring just to make sure that they are ok, i mean the wires so to say.

Take notice if the hard starting coincides with the tank fuel level. If you are having a hard time starting when the level is down you most likely have a fuel line leak. They can leak air in without leaking diesel out.
